This workshop will look at typical course book activities and find ways to make them more engaging, rewarding and useful, by adapting them with a range of appropriate game mechanics.
Several types of course book activities will be reviewed:
- Vocabulary: iterating on vocabulary reference pages and associated tasks
- Grammar: adapting 'gap fills' and production tasks
- Speaking: expanding on basic role play tasks and discussion prompts
- Reading and listening: looking at games that practice receptive skills
In each section we will demonstrate and create games which exploit course books and make use of a variety of game mechanics. Most importantly, these games will be highly adaptable, so they can be used again and again, making the initial time investment well worthwhile.
