Making an Impact - Using a thematic approach to develop 21st century global citizens

Tips and tricks for how to choose games for English class

The landscape of educationa games is vast and confusing. If you come to any ELT event you can see quite a few stands with games. You like cards and pictures packed in colourful boxes. But when you bring these games to your students they are not so excited. Why do your students want to play some games again and again but are reluctant to play the others? Games are not cheap, so if you are making an investment, try to find games that will be enjoyed by all of your student. Different Perspectives - Helping teenagers develop a critical eye

Nowadays it's a generally accepted truth that critical thinking is vital to our students' future success and therefore, as teachers, it is our duty to help them develop this key 21 st century skill. But what exactly do we mean by critical thinking, do we really need to teach it in the English language classroom and if so, how can we do this? Making Speaking Exam Preparation Authentic and Meaningful

Seeking authenticity online

When you hear "authentic materials in the classroom", you probably think of newspapers, magazines or books. But we live in Russia, hence we cannot just go ahead and take our students to a random cafe to practice "in the restaurant" functional language. What authentic materials can we use in class if we have no access to English leaflets, menus and brochures? In this session we are going to talk about finding a way to give our students REAL experience - through technology.

This talk tackles the tough issue of what to do with young learners whose level of English is too high for traditional textbooks aimed at children of their age group. Adapting authentic books with the lower levels by making an encyclopedia book

Teachers often complain that teenage students aren't easy to motivate. Organising a book club may be a good solution to show how the language they are learning may be used for reading real books. But a problem arises with lower levels: original teenage books are too difficult and readers do not have all the cool authentic attractions, like pop-ups, flaps and interactive elements. In this talk I am going to tell you about my solution to this problem: adapting authentic books with the lower levels by making an encyclopedia book!

A case study of using portfolio assessment at middle school. This interactive talk includes two parts. First, we will have a look at theoretical implications of using portfolios, and then we will proceed to exploring our case study.
