What is Trendy English?
Trendy English is a community of English teachers and language school directors founded in 2013. The community unites more than 11,000 members who are eager to develop professionally and exchange innovative ideas of English Teaching and Managing Language Schools. Trendy English also develops educational games for ELT under the brand Trendy English Games. So far, the Trendy English team has held 9 big international ELT conferences and numerous local events. This is our first conference for Hungary.

The main aim of the conference is exchange of proven experience of English language teaching in an interactive format.

These days we can not expect students to come to our lessons inspired. As teachers, we have a responsibility to trigger their inner motivation. You know what bored students mean for us, don't you? A boring job. To make our job less boring, we have to engage them more. We can do that through a different approach towards teaching: make our lessons more interactive.
At the conference you will:
  • gain new ideas for your lessons;
  • share experience with your colleagues;
  • obtain valuable takeaways that can help make your lessons more interactive.

Teaching with Fiction - How to Create Online Escape Room
Joanna Szoke has been teaching business, general and academic English for more than 10 years in Hungary, Poland, and in the UK. Having finished her DELTA, she became actively involved in teacher training, and is a regular presenter at TEFL conferences, an assistant lecturer of methodology and education technology at a Hungarian university, and a content creator for several English teaching websites and video channels.
As teachers, we naturally aim for our students' attention. This has become even more difficult in the current online teaching situation. But there is one tool which has greatly helped and inspired many Hungarian teachers, and that is escape rooms. The immersive storyline options, the variety of possible task types and the sense of competition make escape rooms a motivating and enjoyable tool for learning. In this workshop, we'll look at the basic methodological building blocks, technical requirements, and initial design steps of such games

What makes a good educational game
Elena Peresada, game-designer, the Head of Trendy English
Many teachers say that their teenage students don't like playing games anymore.
But people don't stop loving games with the age. Unfortunately, English teachers know too little about game design to be able to involve growing students with educational games.
In my talk I'll explain what makes a good educational game and how to choose a proper game for teens.

Time-saving starters
Adrienn Szlapak is the EAL Coordinator at Straits International School in Malaysia. She is an experienced ESL teacher and academic manager with a passion for transforming education. A life-long student and a reflective practitioner, she actively looks for ways to develop her skills set and help others do the same.
One of the major challenges of teaching online is time management and we often lose valuable minutes right at the start of a lesson. In this talk I will introduce the idea of saving time with brief starter activities involving Jamboard. I will show some of my favourite tasks that are all low prep and high reward.

How to start creating Genially materials?
Gabriella Veber has been a secondary school teacher for 25 years, mainly teaching adolescents. She has also been working as a mentor for teacher trainees since 2014. Her strength is language exam preparation: She has been an Euroexam examiner for 15 years. Last November she became one of the vice presidents of Országos Nyelvoktatási és Nyelvvizsgáztatási Szakmai Egyesület.
Can you recall one of the major complaints about the spring online teaching period we heard from students and parents alike?

In my talk I will show you how to avoid using numerous sites, importing all our materials onto one single surface. Although Genially is a perfect tool for developing online games, today we'll only concentrate on designing an enjoyable, motivating and useful educational Geni focusing on the Present Pefect tense.

Task-based Learning for Online Teaching
Neil Anderson is a freelance teacher trainer for various organisations including International House Budapest, Euroexam International, ALS House and The Distance DELTA. He is also a co-author of the Delta Publishing title Ideas in Action: Activities for Task-based Learning, and co-run the blog Fluency First ELT, devoted to online task-based lessons.
Task-based Learning (TBL), also known as Task-based Language Teaching (TBLT), is experiencing renewed interest decades after it first gained attention. In this talk I will review what is and what is not a "task" according to established criteria. I will explore the benefits of the approach both in general and more specifically for promoting engaging, meaningful and communicative online lessons. We will look at some example online task-based lessons that participants can readily use with their learners.
