Stop & Think, Developing Critical Thinking in the English Language Classroom

In a world that is growing bigger and smaller at the same time through the use of the Internet, social media, travelling and worldwide news coverage, it is becoming ever more important for students to develop the skills that will help them not only survive this changing world, but to succeed in it. They need to able to form their own opinions on important topics, based on the right information. And there is a need to have a global perspective on everything, a need to develop a critical approach to the global issues that our world currently has to deal with. Referencing National Geographic Learning's Life series, in this practical session we'll look at what exactly we mean by critical thinking, why we should be teaching it in the ELT classroom and how exactly we can help our learners develop the critical thinking skills they need for a successful future.

    Why homework does not stick

We teachers stick to homework and assign it on a regular basis. Worksheets are piling up on the desks of our students. Yet, this homework does not stick as the research has proven that it is not conducive to learning. We believe it is time to take action, rethink and redesign homework assignments. Join us for our presentation to learn more about innovative approach. Let's start this (r)evolution in your classroom!

Story-Based CLIL with Very Young Learners

Stories are considered a traditional treasure of each culture. The workshop shows how we can use a simple story to cater for all areas of children's early learning (CLIL), on the base of the story. Children are immersed in the topic of the story in every activity they do and so they do not need long introductory activities and motivation at the beginning of each lesson. In each activity they can absorb and compare global perspective of different cultural backgrounds.

21st Century Skills Training using Ready-Made Mind Maps

Getting learners to develop 21st century skills, while learning English (EFL and ELF), can be difficult for even the most seasoned teacher - and is a huge challenge for any teacher and learner in a country where English is not the standard language of communication. Additionally, getting learners to get involved in their own learning is an even bigger challenge. How can teachers overcome the helplessness and stress that many L2 learners encounter when faced with longer more complicated content-based learning cycles? How can teachers get their TPACK right in order to achieve their learners personal goals? Can Ready-Made Mind Maps be a quick solution?

Visual literacy in the classroom - learning to see

In my presentation, I would like to briefly explain what visual literacy is and focus on a creative use of images in the classroom. Images do not limit to the coursebook only, quite the opposite, they are everywhere. The main focus will be on the use of students' mobile phones as a source of images. I want to show a number of hands-on activities that can be applied during the lesson. Then, I would like to present how applications such as Pinterest, for example, can be used. Finally, there would be some activities with the use of Instagram that most our student use on a daily basis. Memes, as we all know, make us laugh but can they be used in the lesson? Sure they can, but they should be used creatively.

    Developing Effective Presentation Skills

Let's face it. No student really enjoys standing up in front of their peers and giving presentations in their own language, let alone in a foreign language. But it is a fear they have to overcome and a life skill that they need to master in order to be effective and successful communicators. Indeed, TED's Chris Anderson describes it as a 21st century super power. Referencing National Geographic Learning's Keynote series, in this webinar we'll look at how we can use TED Talks to help develop student's presentation skills and give them the confidence to speak in English.

    Motivate and Communicate

This webinar will showcase some effective and memorable ways of targeting this aim. Along the way we will consider aspects of student motivation, the balance between teacher-led and student-centred learning, and ways of supplementing and adapting the course book. The webinar will feature material taken from Roadmap, the new adult course from Pearson and will aim to equip participants with a number of ready to use ideas for the classroom.

Pushing Hard and Pulling Soft – Differentiation in the Exam Classroom

No situation is perfect, but with large class sizes you increasingly have a wide
range of levels in the same room, which means teaching many lessons to many
students rather than the one size fits all approach that is often conveyed by the
content on the course book page. Add into the mix an exam and you have
another layer of challenge: students are confident of passing and want to get a
great grade and those who are lost and need to be prodded over the pass mark -
this is especially difficult when you are preparing students for an international
exam in a non-English speaking country. This webinar looks at how we can try to
accommodate both sets through a modern course book and some differentiation
    techniques.

Total Teaching: Aiming at self-expression in the secondary classroom

Traditional teaching methods do often not enable secondary students to fully expand their communicative development. This talk bridges the gap between research and practice, and provides useful, informed teaching strategies that allow secondary students to make their knowledge functional. First, we will analyze how you can situate each secondary student cognitively and communicatively through mediation. Second, we will have a closer look on how to involve your secondary students' emotions in collaborative practices in order to enable them little by little to find their own voice in the English language within different communicative contexts.

Teaching beyond grades. Implementing the principles of holistic language learning at the university in the Middle East

With the focus of most EPP programs on the achievement of the passing grades, teaching often acquires the form of direct test preparation. Being healthy in small doses, over-reliance on "drill and kill" materials becomes ineffective in the long run. Clearly, it is possible for educators to make better choices about how and what to teach. This webinar will offer personal reflection on teaching EPP university classes. I will also examine the challenges of teaching large single-gender classes and suggest activities with the focus on the "whole-person" approach.
